European Queer Choir

We are 26 singers from 6 different European countries, led by Music Director Ian Akroyd and accompanist Jenny Wattis. We perform mainly at festivals – Gala Festival 2016 in Denver, USA, UK & Ireland Hand in Hand festivals (Brighton, Manchester & Cardiff), Various Voices Munich and are looking forward to GALA in Minneapolis USA in 2024. Rehearsals are held 3 to 4 times a year, both virtually and in-person. Come and join us as we prepare for our next American adventure!

The European Queer Choir was formed in 2016 to represent Europe at the US GALA festival in Denver, CO. EQC began as a small group of 16 singers but its membership has changed over time and the choir now comprises 26 singers from 6 different European countries. Since Denver, EQC have performed at the UK & Ireland Hand in Hand festivals (Brighton, Manchester & Cardiff), Various Voices in Munich and are looking forward to GALA in Minneapolis, MN in 2024. We’ve also sung in Berlin; Groningen (Netherlands); London, Leeds and Brighton (UK)

EQC has managed to navigate its way through the impacts of Covid and online rehearsing as well as coping with an unexpected alto in a tutu during a performance of ‘Sugar Plum Fairy’ at Various Voices – Munich.
Three or four times a year singers meet in cities across Europe for rehearsal weekends which can be attended in person or online (the altos strongly recommend participating in person following their Saturday evening socialising in Brighton). A weekend in Malaga in November was a highlight, especially for those brave enough to swim in the pool!

In our calendar of events, Various Voices is an absolute highlight and the European Queer Choir (EQC) is looking forward to joining its lovely hosts and wonderfully diverse European queer community in performing, participating, and enjoying the beautiful city of Bologna. We also hope to recruit new members who are interested in joining us performing at the Gala Festival in Minneapolis USA in July 2024.
EQC welcomes new members, please come and say HELLO!”
